Rapper 50 Cent has propelled himself to super-stardom over the years proudly flaunting that he has “been hit with a few shells, but … don’t walk wit’ a limp.” It now appears that Mr. Jackson, always making sure to “get rich or die tryin’,” hopes to turn a virtual shooting into mounds of bling.
Traffix, Inc., a web-based advertising company, has recently been served with a complaint from Mr. Jackson that claims Traffix’s game “Shoot the rapper” illegally uses his likeness.
“Shoot the rapper,” pictured below, is displayed as a banner advertisement on numerous websites and encourages users to “shoot” a cartoon likeness of a rapper walking across the screen by clicking on the rapper with a mouse. A successful “shot” redirects the user to one of Traffix’s client websites.
While previous version of the ad featured a red “blood spray” upon a successful shot, the latest version features the rapper walking along a red carpet with a photographer “shooting” him with a camera.
The game never specifically mentions Curtis Jackson by name or references his “50 Cent” persona, but Mr. Jackson’s attorney, Peter Raymond, claims that “there’s no doubt the character is intended to be him.”
Mr. Jackson seeks $1 million in actual damages, a permanent injunction, and unspecified punitive damages.
My guess is that Traffix will pull the ad and settle out of court, anyone care to bet against me?
